I do NOT want Windows to automatically download updates at any time since I might have that restricted method as my only access. I had thought I set this option when I installed Windows 8, but not on this particular computer. Be aware that Microsoft is not the only software author who has automatic software updating programs look in your Startup items to see others which might be active in your installation.
Having enabled Safe Mode as an explicit option, I now have a reliable way to enter Windows 8 should a future driver problem happen. You may read alternative advice which asks you to boot from a Windows 8 installation disk: that option is OK for the office, but less attractive for laptop users and road warriors. In the end, all was OK: the KB installed and my Windows Update shows an nVidia driver that people with my laptop model should not install. Absolutely not. But is there a "blank" screen?
