How could a Battlefield game with hover tanks and fighting mechs possibly go awry? Well, it it didn't help that Battlefield came out just a year and four months after Battlefield 2, and those sci-fi standbys that sound so bulletproof now lent it a gimmicky image for people who preferred the more grounded literally feel of previous Battlefields.
It was unfortunate, because really was a solid game - expanding on the new mechanics of Battlefield 2 with faster combat and a more varied arsenal. Not to mention the still-whispered-of greatness that was Titan, a new game mode that had players fighting to control missile solos on the ground then board the opposing team's Avengers-style hover carrier.
Battlefield Vietnam seemed strange when it came out and it's even more odd in hindsight. Keep in mind that we were still just shy of 30 years away from the end of the Vietnam War when Battlefield Vietnam came out - uncomfortably close for such a devastating, divisive conflict.
The whole thing was probably a bad idea… but it was still fun to play. This console spin-off from the core Battlefield series was, shall we say, quite experimental. It appeared during the transition period between the PS2 generation and the Xbox , so was available on both older and newer consoles. The result is that it varied in quality and intent - the version is a polished translation and actually stands up pretty well as a Battlefield game.
The core gimmick here is that the solo campaign allowed you to hotswap between soldiers, essentially zipping across the battlefield like some kind of ghost, and possessing the body of a different grunt. It kinda worked, but gameplay often felt a little jumbled and disjointed although there are smart moments contained within the mechanic. With player online modes, which were largely forgettable, this was a recognisable Battlefield game, but very much a poor cousin to Battlefield 2 which never appeared on consoles.
In terms of content alone, Battlefield is very, very small. It features just a handful of multiplayer maps, vehicles, and weapons, with no single player experience to speak of whatsoever. The iconic main theme, a stirring string rendition that perfectly bottles the romanticised fantasy of military life, is still stuck in my head to this day. Taking all of that together, is classic Battlefield distilled into its purest form, offered up on a plate that few can refuse, sizzling with visual dazzle and historical heft.
Sadly, launch day troubles soured public opinion on the game for quite some time, its best qualities blighted by crippled servers and bugs aplenty. Battlefield 4 has come a long way since then, but we can't ignore the shadow of its false promises, hence its somewhat diminished position on this list. There's a lot to love about Battlefield 5.
The game takes place in the 22nd-century during some kind of ice age while having a war between the EU Union and the Pan Asian Coalition. These Titans cannot be destroyed by regular weapons and the only way to destroy them is by using Anti-Titan missiles. These missiles are found in silos across the map and the main goal during combat is to fight the other team to control these silos.
The only expansion that was released is called Northern Strike and it offers a few new weapons and maps. But the major feature is the new Assault Lines game mode which is similar to the Conquest mode. Battlefield: Bad Company is one of the best games of the franchise. It was the first game with a good storyline and unique characters.
The best thing about this game was simply the single-player campaign. The Gold Rush multiplayer mode was introduced ever in this game and it was the only multiplayer mode in the game until the later addition of the Conquest mode. The game also featured the great Frostbite engine for the first time which is now being used for the modern series of Battlefield. This Engine has improved the physical and visual effects, such as the destruction of buildings.
The Gold Rush mode goal is to defend or attack a valuable object, the Gold Crates. The attacking team will attack these crates which are located around the map, and the defenders will simply defend these crates. The attackers have a specific number of respawns which will reset if they manage to destroy the two crates.
But still, the best thing about this game is again the single-player campaign. Battlefield Heroes is a free-to-play online game that has no single-player mode. It was the first game in the series to be played in a third-person shooter view. The game also had very unique graphics compared to the previous games, which is very similar to Fortnite. Most of that content is cosmetic clothing, however, there were pay-to-win items such as EXP boosters.
The game consists of 4 maps and many weapons and vehicles. Each of them has been updated to suit the latest version of the game. It was locked at the beginning of the game as a challenge to see which player base of the two platforms will reach 43 million kills first.
The multiplayer gameplay consists of players Conquest mode, but some of the mechanics were modified to bring a unique taste to the game. For example, the ammo was unlimited and the health would regain over time. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the second part of the amazing original Bad Company version.
Its single-player gameplay is much more intensive and still has that unique experience of the original version. It begins during the great World War II and it is probably the best single-player campaign so far.
The multiplayer mode this time has improved compared to the original Bad Company. Conquest is just like the regular Conquest mode, and Squad Rush is a small-scale game mode of Rush. Squad Deathmatch consists of 4 squads fighting each other, each squad has 4 players and the first squad to reach 50 kills is the winner. The multiplayer mode was even more impressive because of the quality sound effects and amazing physics of destruction.
Bad Company 2 Vietnam is the only expansion that was added to the game, it has the same original characters, but takes you to the Vietnam war. All the weapons and war machines are changed to suit the Vietnam war. Battlefield Online was just a remake of Battlefield 2 with very bad visuals and a pretty much dead player base. It was free-to-play and directed towards the Eastern Market by the development of Neowiz Games.
There is really nothing to say about this game other than being completely useless and full of technical issues. They finally decided to shut down the game for the good in Battlefield Play4Free was similar to Battlefield Heroes in terms of being free-to-play and pay-to-win at the same time. The game simply uses the in-game currency that is used to buy permanent powerful weapons and armor.
This currency is called Battlefunds and can be purchased with real money. The game has no single-player mode and totally revolves around the multiplayer gameplay which consists of the Conquest mode. The weapons are taken from Bad Company 2 and the maps and taken from Battlefield 2, things that actually make it a game with no personality. This game was also taken down in just like Battlefield Online and Battlefield Heroes.
Battlefield 3 started a whole new era for the franchise. It is indeed one of the best games in the franchise with great multiplayer gameplay. The game also featured the Frostbite 2. That means the visual effects were, obviously, much better compared to the previous versions of the game. Battlefield 3 featured a large variety of weapons, vehicles, and jets, in addition to large maps capable of containing 64 players.
The game also introduced the Premium membership which contains all the available expansions. Each of these expansions brought new weapons, vehicles, maps, and game modes to the game. Battlefield 3: Aftershock is an exclusive entry in the franchise released exclusively for iOS via the App Store. The aforementioned was set to release alongside Battlefield 3 but was later delayed.
The game was released for free back then. Unfortunately, it was later pulled to the negative reception it had received.
